# Overview

A terminal multiplexer whose server you can drive from code.

A background server owns the terminal. The TUI, desktop, and agents connect to it.

[Install phux](/installation) · [Try in your browser](https://phux.sh/embed) · [Use an agent](#use-an-agent)

## Try it

1. **Start:** `phux` — Open a shell.
2. **Detach:** `Ctrl-A, then d` — Leave it running.
3. **Return:** `phux` — Same shell, same output.

Detach leaves it running. A server crash or reboot ends it. [What survives what](/concepts#what-survives-what).

## The model

Sessions own resources. Arrangements place them. Views show them. A server owns running terminals; each client chooses its local views and focus. [Concepts](/concepts).

## Guides

- [Coding agents](/agents) — Connect your agent host and see what its agents are doing.
- [Remote machines](/remote) — Reach another machine's server with one command.
- [Getting started](/getting-started) — First session, keys, and the tmux differences.

## Use an agent

```text
Read https://docs.phux.sh/llms.txt and help me get started with phux. Choose the setup for my agent host, check my installed version, and verify a read before sending input. Use exact pane targets and bounded waits. Ask before interrupting or destroying existing work.
